Organization of Guidance Services At Elementary Level

The need for guidance is felt right from the day the child enters the school and continues till he is in the process of schooling. However, the information collected about him during all these years is of immense use when he starts thinking in terms of joining some occupation or he is to go in for further studies or he is to join some training etc. Before that, he so often needs many aspects of guidance in the process of education or some personal problems of adjustment etc.

In our country, yet the atmosphere and environments are not ripe for the establishment and development of mature and effective guidance services. All this has created a dichotomy between what is being done in our schools with regard to guidance services and what is needed to be done in actual process in our institutions. It is also noticed with a little pain, that our school administration is not taking the organisation of guidance services seriously. The result is that it is not doing very useful service to the younger generation.

With the advancement of science and technology, the world of work’ has so much extended its wings, that the students in the delta classes, are confused with the multiple entries to the world of higher education and work. It is being further aggravated by the galloping unemployment position of educated persons. The type of help and assistance passed on to him from his friends, assistance provided by the parents and some un-systemic information provided by the teachers, are only poor substitutes for the real guidance service. In order to ensure that he is on the right path, the school is to establish guidance services in a systematic way. It is also helpful to him to provide direction to him to solve his problems, which are very many and multiple in nature.
