Principles of Guidance

Crow & Crow have established the following guiding principles.

  • Individual Development: The fundamental concept of guiding is primarily concerned with the personal development of the individual. Individuals should be allowed entire freedom to form their personalities, with assistance available anytime they require it.
  • Individual Differences: People vary greatly in their physical, mental, social, and emotional development. No two people are alike. The guidance recognises these variances among students and is concerned with their personal development by recognising each individual’s unique development features, requirements, and issues.
  • True Function Principle: Guidance helps the individual. (a) To develop and adopt meaningful and realistic behavioural goals, and (b) To apply these goals in the conduct of his activities.
  • Cooperation Principle: Existing social, economic, and political upheaval is causing a slew of complicated maladjustment issues that necessitate collaboration between experienced and skilled guiding professionals and the persons experiencing difficulties. No one can be forced to follow instructions. The antecedent required condition for offering guidance is the individual’s agreement and cooperation.
  • Continuity Principle: Guidance should be viewed as a continual process of service to an individual at various periods of his life. It begins in childhood and lasts till late in life.
  • Elaboration Principle: Curriculum materials and instructional processes should be developed in accordance with the guideline points.
  • Expert Opinion Principle: Specific and significant guidance difficulties should be directed to those who have been educated to deal with a specific area of adjustment for their expert opinion.
