Psychological Foundations of Education

Counselling and guidance are necessary from a psychological standpoint since no one can succeed in every circumstance or activity in life. For instance, not every student can succeed in classes. Only those with a natural talent for science may be successful. Similarly, not everyone can succeed as an engineer. Certain talents and abilities are necessary for success in every circumstance and activity in life. Without those, a person has little possibility of becoming successful in those objectives.

However, this does not stop them from succeeding in other areas. The truth is that he can build a name for himself in courses and professions that need abilities and skills that he lacks. Psychological studies have indicated that there are significant differences between individuals in terms of these talents, aptitudes, interests, and skills. This is a psychological reality that determines whether or not people are suitable for certain jobs. Everyone cannot accomplish anything equally well. On the other hand, the jobs and activities of the world around us differ in terms of their requirements.

There are some whose potentialities are high and others have low or average one. Whatever his potentialities. Society has a responsibility to develop these potentialities to the optimum level. This is in the interest of the individual and society. Guidance and counselling can play a more positive role in the achievement of this goal. This intact is one of the objectives of guidance. This fact of psychology supports the view that guidance is a necessary service.

Psychology has also revealed that failures, disappointments, problems blocks and barriers in life generate tensions and stress within the individual which result in maladjustments and several kinds of behavioural problems. In such situations, all individuals need proper guidance and counselling. This prevents the waste of human resources and saves individuals from leading unhappy life. If the commitment of a society is to make every individual live a happy, balanced and effective life guidance and counselling services have to be given priority in the plans and programmes of social services. They should be given the same importance as is given to hospitals and educational institutions.

Researchers have established the fact that no two individuals are alike. Individuals differ from one another in body and mind, in taste and temperament. There is a need for an analysis of individual traits for education. We should know what types of differences will lead to what result. Some scientific basis for the allocation of courses and occupations has to be evolved. Guidance is to help us to apply new psychological insights into the nature of the individual.

From a broad perspective, if we study psychology, then it includes the knowledge of the soul as well as knowledge of human behaviour. Man does not live in a vacuum. He lives in a society.

Thus he falls victim of various kinds of problems he will develop disintegrative behaviour and will not enjoy social acceptance. The purpose of this school of thought is to save the person from various psychological problems.

In short, psychological guidance will remove superstitions, illusions and other mental complexes for achieving this end, each school should be provided with a counsellor. The counsellor will help the student choosing their subject, and tutors and will give them information about various occupations.

Besides, he will let them know the career information throughout the country.
