How many types of grammars are there

The most traditional grammar is prescriptive grammar which was based on the Latin and Greek models. It prescribed rules for writing ‘correct English and ignored speaking altogether. The ‘part of speech’ as mentioned for the English language was directly taken from the Latin language and prescribed for not only English but the world languages in general. In the early 20′ century when Linguistics came On the scene, attention shifted from writing to speech and grammar was written to describe the way language was used by its living speakers. They were called descriptive grammars In 1957, Noam Chomsky came up with the psycholinguistic theory of language and a new grammar that viewed language as the innate capacity of native speakers. It was called Generative Grammar. Michael Halliday looked at the way language served different functions for the speaker in social settings. It was called Functional Grammar.

The Grammar of Contemporary English, A Communicative Grammar of English, A Comprehensive Grammar of English and Cambridge Grammar of English: A Comprehensive Guide, Spoken and Written English Grammar and Usage are some of the modern grammars that are descriptive in nature.
