Importance of Creativity in Teaching

Creativity is developed with a foundation of knowledge, learning a discipline, and mastering a way of thinking. We learn to be creative by experimenting, exploring, questioning assumptions, using imagination and synthesizing information

Creativity is one of the most appreciated learning skills, whose development has been considered essential to achieving effective and high-level learning. It has been defined as a result, as a process, as a construct derived from the influence of the experience and as a personality feature of human nature. The focus has been centred on highlighting the development of creativity from an educational approach, starting from the description, implication of the use and application of creative strategies in the teaching and learning processes.

Higher-order thinking skills are those involved in competent and strategic thinking, and these skills include critical, creative, and metacognitive thinking, also known as deep learning. In addition, the development of creativity is now considered essential to achieving effective high-level learning.

Despite the observed need for the development of creativity in the curriculum, there is a general tendency to reproduce teaching and learning models, and teachers’ search for methods of teaching creativity is limited, resulting in low creativity development in students, with reproductive learning. Creativity is inherent in human development and personality. It begins to develop from the early years of school and continues into higher education, growing with the number of experiences that individuals have and to the extent that the work of teachers could encourage them.

Therefore, creativity has been an essential skill for the design and development of a curriculum. The concept and psychological construct of creativity were defined and later the psychological process involved was discussed to implement teaching and learning strategies geared towards it.

Creativity is the ability to produce creative products, hence a creative person is a person who produces creative products regularly.

A creative product is defined as something new, original, appropriate or valuable in a specific context. These qualities have also been summed up in two fundamental aspects of creative products, namely novelty and quality. which must also include originality or appropriateness.
