Reorienting education towards sustainability involves the various levels of formal and informal education at all levels of society.
1. Formal Environmental Education
Environmental Education is increasingly a prominent part of primary, secondary and tertiary education in the world. The formal education sector plays a vital role in environmental education and awareness by exposing the younger generation to the information, issues, analysis and interpretations of the environment and development.
- First degree and Secondary level: At level ist, the attempt is made to aware the child of the environment. Emphases should be on building awareness followed by actual life situations and conservation.
- At the two-degree level, the objective must be real-life examples, experiences, awareness and problem identification.
- At level third or at the college level, maximum emphasis should be on knowledge regarding sustainable development and conservation.
2. Non-Formal Education
Non-Formal education activities exist alongside the formal educational system, at curricular and extracurricular levels, in occupational training and through wide public awareness activities through media, NGOs etc.
