This theory is also known as historical perspective theory, it has its roots in Sigmund Freud, who believed there are unconscious forces that drive human behavior. The technique he developed is known as free association, which is about freely talking with the psychiatrist and telling every detail even if it is censored or not. Freud strongly believed and writes about dreams in his research that dreams play an important role in human behavior and he also mentions the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious minds in his Psychoanalytical theory.
In general, counsellors and psychotherapists who use this approach focus much on the past, childhood experiences, or any other event which is related to the past to analyze the behavior of a client thoroughly.
