The idea of integration was developed as the opposite of segregation. It demanded an end to the practise of educating children in special schools' segregated environments and pushed for their education to be provided in ordinary classrooms. In this sense, integration was previously the phrase used to describe a handicapped child's effective integration into a regular school when they were predominantly educated in separate special schools.
