Individuals' capacity to move positions within a social stratification structure is referred to as social mobility. Social mobility occurs when people's economic conditions improve or deteriorate in a way that impacts their social class. One approach is to advance in one's profession by climbing the corporate ladder. For example, a clerk may begin their work as a clerk and progress to a higher position, such as director, later in life. One sibling may rise to a better social status than his or her brother or sister.
