What are the aims of Direct Method

The main purpose of this method is to make the pupil think in English. It expects the child to express his thoughts and feelings without the intervention of his mother tongue. It also enables the child to grasp what he heard or reads in English. Thus, the real aim of the method is to make the child acquire a real command over the language.

According to H. Champion, “Instinctive, unerring language sense which we all possess in varying degree in the mother-tongue, and which superseding all rules, grammars and dictionaries, resting at the bottom on the direct association between experience and expression, is the only sure guide in the use of Language.”
