Communicative functions of Language

The communicative function of a language plays an important role. Therefore if a person wants to be well at language he needs vocabulary and structures for the purpose of communication. He needs functional grammar that helps him succeed in passing on information or his feelings and ideas to others.

But there is one caution that just having mastery over vocabulary and structures is not sufficient for learning a language. One should have the skill to use them at aright and appropriate place. For example when a person visits some foreign country, if he is able to communicate in foreign language only then he can be successful there and his living conditions become easier. So it is very essential that he must possess the communicative ability.

Therefore it can be safely concluded that the structural aspect of the language is important in its place and its functional aspect is important in its own way. This does not mean that the functional aspect is more important than the structural aspect. The structural aspect is the basis and that is what gives the language functions. Therefore it can be safely said that language should be learnt mainly for communication purposes. The functional effectiveness of the language is important.
