Measures taken by the British to promote and develop English in India

The Governor General of India, lord Bentinck, was authorised to implement article 43 of the Charter Act of 1813, to spend a minimum of rupees one lac each year for the development of education in India, to spend the money on the ‘revival and improvement of literature’ introduction and promotion of a knowledge of sciences among the inhabitants of British territories in India’ etc. Lord William Bentinck gave a new meaning to the words, literature, Indian Scholar, aims of education and medium of instruction. The study of English was then made compulsory in India. The administration fully supported it, so the language study did not face much problem spreading in Indian territories. It was adopted in schools and higher educational institutions and it was also the official and business language.
