Definition of Cognitive Development
The process through which children explore, analyse, and notice their environment is known as cognitive development. It involves the growth of knowledge, character, and problem-solving abilities that aid in their comprehension of the environment. Brain development is a part of cognitive development. It is said that Jean Piaget is the originator of cognitive development. He was a Swiss psychologist who studied how children’s minds developed as they were growing up. Jean Piaget said that
“Cognitive development is a progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and environmental experience.”
Factors that affect the cognitive development of learners
Environment
The development of a person’s cognitive abilities is significantly influenced by their environment. A stimulating and supportive environment is required for children’s appropriate cognitive development. According to Lucurto’s (1990) research, a child’s IQ rises when they are in a supportive and happy environment.
Environment of Home
The home environment of a kid might have an impact on their cognitive growth. A child’s intellectual functioning quickens if they are exposed to early learning experiences, which allows them to have a significantly faster rate of cognitive growth.
Social and Economic status
The terms social status and economic well-being are used to describe an individual’s socio-economic standing. A youngster from a stable socioeconomic environment is more likely to achieve higher levels of education than a child from a less stable one.
Heredity
The term “heritage” describes how parents pass on their children’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and other traits. When a child’s cognitive senses are prepared and mature to acquire cognitive skills, it is determined by heredity.
Experiences
According to Piaget, children’s experiences in the physical and real world have a significant impact on their cognitive development.
Learning opportunities
The learning opportunities and surroundings a kid is exposed to can have a significant impact on their cognitive development. A youngster can achieve milestones more quickly if they are offered learning chances at a young age.
Nutrition
Nutrition has a significant impact on how people develop their cognitive abilities. The appropriate development of a child’s cognitive abilities depends on a healthy, balanced diet.
