Meaning and Characteristics of Behavioural Technology

Behavior is the subject of psychology. It investigates the origins and principles of how living things behave. Learning is the altering of behaviour via experiences and activities. The instructional activities are made to cause the pupils’ behaviour to alter in a positive way. Psychology examines all forms of human behaviour. Therefore, the field of behavioural technology is larger than that of educational technology. Industry, defence, business, communication, administration, health, inspiration, training, education, teaching, and instruction are all covered.

These locations call for particular behaviours. The phrase “behavioural technology” is used by B.F. Skinner in his book “Technology and instruction.” The teaching and learning activities are planned to bring about the desired behaviour change in the pupils in order to accomplish specified learning objectives. Thus, behavioural technology includes both teaching and instructional technology. However, in the context of education, it mostly relates to teacher behaviour.

The use of behavioural technology to change teacher behaviour is based on scientific principles. Another name for this is training technology.

Amidon. Ned A. Flanders B.F. Skinner, Ober and Anderson have contributed significantly in the area of behavioural technology. It is limited to the teacher behaviour and teaching behaviour.

Assumptions- The behavioural technology is based on the following assumptions:

  • Teacher behaviour is observable.
  • Teacher behaviour is measurable and quantifiable.
  • Teacher behaviour is relative.
  • Teacher behaviour is social and psychological.
  • Teacher behaviour is modifiable.

Characteristics of Behavioural Technology

It has the following important factures:

  • It is focused on achieving the goals of the psychomotor. It is possible to hone the specialised teaching abilities.
  • It is possible to study the behaviour component and behaviour flow in the classroom and provide recommendations for desired improvement.
  • The study of and use of behavioural technology may be a key tool used by schools of education in producing successful teachers and competency-based teacher preparation.
  • During teaching practise, it is possible to give student-teachers the appropriate reinforcement.
  • The usage of feedback devices can enhance the content and communication elements.
  • When offering teaching training, the unique variations between student and teacher can be taken into account.
  • It is possible to evaluate teaching performance in a methodical and impartial manner.
  • The philosophy of teaching may benefit from the use of behavioural technology.
