What Were The Main Features of Buddhist Period Education Discuss its Relevance in The Present Education System
It grew in prominence when the value of teacher education was acknowledged. The profession of teacher was no longer limited to Brahmans. After rigorous training, any enlightened individual from any class of the community may obtain the rank of teacher.
During this time, the formal system of teacher education arose. During this period, a robust, well-planned, and comprehensive system of teacher education was established.
Formal teacher education originated over this seven-century era. Teachers were educated with the goal of spreading Buddhism. They were monks who preached the spirit of Buddhism to the masses.
To get the status of a teacher, one had to be kept under the supervision of instructors from whom he learnt the components of morality, correct behaviour, and Dharma instruction. When the supervisors were satisfied, they issued a certificate indicating that the candidate is qualified to teach.
During the Buddhist period, the process of teaching instructors (monks) was based on a system that was subsequently recognised and dubbed the monitorial system. During the Buddhist period, teaching was regarded as the most honourable vocation.
