What is school time table

Time table is a clock that determines the efficient working of an individual or group of persons or institutions. It indicates which activities have been organised so far, the place of their organization, the in charge of the activity and the particular group of students involved in it.

Here are some important definitions of time table by some famous personalities:

H.G Stead defines” A school time table is a mirror that reflects the entire educational plan of the school “its Jaswant Singh defines” The schedule is the spark plug of the school which sets into motion it’s various activities and programmes”

A proper timetable makes school functioning to be systematic, eliminates wastage of time and energy, ensures due attention to every subject and ensures equitable distribution of work among teachers. Besides, a proper and effective timetable also ensures proper work.

Types of Time Table

Consolidated or general timetable -It includes detailed working of activities to be executed by all students. It also gives information about the time of a period, time of recess and time of departure from the school.

Class timetable– This timetable is only for a particular class of different sections. This timetable contains all the subject teacher allocations done for the working days in the week for a particular class. Each class in the school will have an individual class-wise timetable. This timetable will also contain time-slot allocations for non-teaching periods like free time, games, extra-curricular activities, etc.

Teachers time table– This type of timetable is set only for the teachers so that they have no confusion about what subject they are supposed to teach, at what time, and in which class. It helps to avoid the collapsing of two teachers’ time tables in the same class.

Teachers vacant period time table-This timetable contains the vacant period info of all teachers. This is usually kept in the principal’s or admin chief’s room so that the efficient allocation of teachers can be done by looking at the free periods available all across the institution.

Games timetable- As the name indicates this timetable contains the different games and sports played using the indoor and outdoor playfields in the school. This timetable is managed by the principal as well as the physical education head of the school. This timetable helps to coordinate the grounds and indoor playrooms effectively.

Co-curricular activities timetable– The co-curricular activities timetable allocates the teachers in charge of each co-curricular activity with a room for the activity. This timetable is usually publicly displayed on the noticeboard or distributed to the student prior.

Home Work time table-This is not followed in all the schools. Even though regular homework is assigned to students, a fixed timetable is not given to parents and students to follow at home. With the homework timetable, it is possible to balance the time spent on different subjects at home. This will help parents to allocate the time for different homework assignments.

Besides, the principles for constructing a good timetable depend on the type of school, departmental rules, regulations, availability of time, relative importance and difficulty of subjects, the principle of flexibility, variety, elements of fatigue, school building and equipment.
