The Psycho-Analytic the psychoanalytic theory of personality by Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud, the founder of the School of Psycho-analysis, proposed this approach. There are  two different kinds of psychoanalytic methods:

  • Free Association Test
  • Dream Analysis Method

The results of these two tests reveal the subconscious personality idiosyncrasies. The participant of the psychoanalytic theory narrates the dream without engaging the subconscious, allowing the mind to freely correlate the vision objects and activities.

The reality of the collective unconscious is conveyed due to the lack of the mental aspect, which allows the psychoanalyst to uncover different quirks. The biggest challenge is the requirement for a professional and competent psychoanalyst. The psychoanalyst frequently examines his own thoughts to eliminate any potential bias.

Association Test Psychology

The method is used in psychology to investigate how the mind is organized, with emphasis on the cognitive relationships that underpin sensation and interpretation, remembering, speech, judgment, and desire.

The participant in the free-association test is instructed to report the first word that occurs to them after knowing the meaning, notion, or other stimulation. A relationship between the stimulus and the reaction can be regulated through “controlled association”.  The fundamental information offered by the assessment is the participant’s phrases and the response time for each answer, while more intricate analysis may be utilized for certain objectives.

In psychoanalysis, association tests are also a standard approach for examining personality and its disorders. With the latter, a participant’s response to highly emotional experiences and concepts elicited by a few test stimuli may result in abnormally lengthy or short response times, abnormal or exposing connections, or both.

Dream Analysis in Psychology

According to Freud’s theory on dream interpretation, which he wrote about in 1900 in The Interpretation of Dreams, the unconscious keeps your repressed impulses and communicates those emotions through the imagination, shielding the consciousness from unsettling ideas and impulses. Furthermore, he thought that your day residue, or the events from the day before, frequently served as inspiration for your dreams.

A significant portion of Freud’s ideas involve symbolism. He believed that the problem a dream depicts (what you recall) is not the same as its manifest content; instead, the dream’s latent content, or underlying reason, has to be understood.

It is believed that dream analysis brings about change through fostering a person’s connection to their unconscious. The unknowable becomes known when it rises to the conscious level of a person’s consciousness. This enables an individual to digest and operate through that information in order to enhance their performance.

The following equipment is frequently employed in physiological approaches to personality assessment:

  • Pneumograph: This device measures a person’s rate of breathing activity.
  • Plenthysmograp: The plenthysmograph is used to measure a person’s blood pressure.
  • Shymograph: This device measures cardiac activity.
  • Electrocardiograph: The electrocardiograph is used to assess cardiac activity.
  • Electro-encephalograph: The electrical activity of the human brain is measured using the electro-encephalograph.
  • Graphology: Analyzing a person’s handwriting to determine their personality.
  • Electromyogram: An electromyogram is a device that measures muscle activity.
