Guidance Counselling and Psychotherapy

1)Counselling focuses on day to day issues of the individual. Psychotherapy goes beyond the day to day issues of the individual into chronic mental and physical problems.

2)In general, Counselling is recommended for specific issues and situations, such as addiction or grief, and takes place over weeks to several months. Psychotherapy, in contrast, tends to explore past issues that might be contributing to present day problems.

3)Counselling refers to a process where the counsellor would guide the counselee with the intention of finding solutions to a problem that the counselee is facing which are mostly related to day to day life while Psychotherapy is a healing process where the therapist and the client engage in an effort to find solutions to chronic problem which can be emotional or physical.

4)Counselling focuses on  day to day issues of the individual while Psychotherapy goes beyond the day to day issues of the individual into chronic mental and physical problems.

5)A psychotherapist has more skills in comparison to a counsellor as it extends beyond the basic counseling skills while A psychotherapist can conduct counseling, but a counsellor cannot conduct psychotherapies.

6)The duration of counseling is brief as compared to that of  psychotherapy, where the duration is much longer.

7)Counselling can be included in psychotherapy, but psychotherapy cannot be included in Counselling.
