Difference Between Traditional and Modern Guidance and Counselling

1)The traditional Counselling process usually involves four elements: traditional counsellor, client, family, and community. The Counselling process is like a road map that helps the counsellor to know when to get started, where to go, and when to determine the endpoint of the Counselling journey. While modern counselling supports the process in which a counsellor holds face-to-face talks with another person to help him or her solve a personal problem or help improve that person’s attitude, behaviour or character.

2)In traditional guidance, it is assumed that there are groups of people, such as parents, elders, teachers, or any wiser people, who can give direction to the younger or less experienced people while modern guidance refers to the process of helping individuals to discover and develop their potential. Furthermore, modern guidance helps develop an individual’s educational, vocational, and psychological skills.

An overview

The traditional approach is that such direction is to be obeyed as exactly as possible. Since the latter half of the 20th century, society is under the influence of postmodernism and the electronic explosion. The younger are no longer considered themselves to be less informed. There is no longer a clear distinction between right and wrong. The idea of ‘fake’ being just ‘alternative fact’ has been openly paraded in front of us. Example of effective modern guidance: “we offer you multiple choices, just pick one for yourself”

Modern guidance refers to the process of helping individuals to discover and develop their potential.
